Replacing a Lost License
If you lost your license or it was stolen or mutilated, you should apply for a duplicate from the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). Since you're not allowed to drive without a license, you should replace the missing license right away.
To do so, take these steps:
- File a report with your local police department if your license was stolen. This will help protect you against identity theft.
- Visit any MVC agency in person.
- Provide proof of identity according to the state's six-point verification system.
- Pay the $11 fee for a duplicate license.
If you have changed your name since your original license was issued, you should provide proof of the change when applying for a duplicate. Proof can include a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order showing the name change. Your new license will reflect your new name.
Out-of-State Travelers
If you're traveling out of the state or country, you can replace your driver's license through the mail by calling the MVC at (609) 292-6500. Ask the MVC to send you an application for a replacement driver's license. If you do not have a digital license on file, you may only apply for a one-year temporary license.
